History of the Group

The Society, which is a registered charity, adopted its present title in 1996. It was originally formed in 1979 as The Badger Protection Society. At that time we were one of about four groups nationwide dedicated to badger protection. Now there are over 80 groups affiliated, as we are, to the National Federation of Badger Groups. We hosted a convention in 1985 when the seeds were sown for the creation of what is now the NFBG, and trustees of the Federation have been appointed from our Society.

Surrey's wildlife habitats are constantly under threat from development.
What we do

The Society was formed to watch over the local badger population and to respond to activities detrimental to badger welfare. We give free advice and practical assistance in all problems involving badgers and have committee members with years of experience in badger welfare matters. We are often involved in planning applications where the presence and protection of badgers is an issue, conducting surveys and preparing reports. Where it becomes necessary to undertake work that requires the issue of a licence by English Nature or DEFRA, our senior field officer is often appointed as the licence holder when the Society is involved.

We rescued this badger who had become trapped in a flooded drain. He was nursed back to health and returned to the wild.

Inevitably we receive many calls about badgers who have been injured or killed on roads in our area. Our contacts with local vets and wildlife hospitals enable us to ensure the best possible care for any badgers we can rescue and who can then be returned to the wild. Our knowledge of the whereabouts of setts helps in this regard also. We are always keen to receive information about badgers in our area to build on the data already held.

In addition to the above activities, we attend various fairs, countryside days and the like in our area publicising our work, giving help and information about badger issues, and raising funds for the Society.
